Spot UV Packaging

Use Spot UV when selected artwork areas need a clear glossy contrast over a matte, printed, or laminated surface. The artwork file must identify UV areas clearly so registration and coverage can be reviewed.

What it is

Spot UV applies a clear glossy coating to selected artwork areas so those areas contrast against the surrounding print or lamination.

When to use it

  • Logo marks, patterns, product names, texture effects, and selected graphics that need shine without making the full package glossy.
  • Matte laminated boxes, cartons, sleeves, and rigid boxes where gloss contrast is visible.
  • Projects with a clear UV mask or artwork layer.

When not to use it

  • Very small details or tight registration areas without proof review.
  • Full-surface gloss needs, where gloss lamination may be the better first choice.
  • Using Spot UV on a surface where contrast will be too subtle.

Compatibility notes

  • Works with matte lamination, CMYK print, rigid boxes, cartons, tubes, labels, and sleeves.
  • Needs review when combined with foil, embossing, or textured paper.
  • Raised UV requires clearer sample expectations than standard flat Spot UV.

Production risks to review

  • Registration can be visible if the UV edge follows print detail.
  • Large UV areas can show coating variation.
  • Contrast depends heavily on base surface and lighting.

What this finish changes

  • Adds glossy contrast to selected logos, patterns, titles, or texture areas
  • Works best when the UV area has enough size and spacing to register cleanly
  • Can create strong visual contrast on matte laminated packaging

  • Base print and lamination choice
  • Whether raised UV or standard flat UV is requested
